What is Black Friday?
Black Friday was originally started in the US and was regarded as the first day of the Christmas shopping season, on which retailers make many special offers. It is the Friday after the US holiday of thanksgiving. Black refers to stores moving from the 'red' to the 'black', back when accounting records were kept by hand and red ick indicated loss, and black profit.
It was in 2013 that Black Friday truly entered the British consciousness. Asda, owned by Walmart, had a black Friday sale in the UK and offered massive savings on a range of goods. The following year other big UK retailers jumped on the black Friday bandwagon, resulting in a sale induced frenzy across the country. And so, black Friday had officially made its way across the Atlantic perpetuated by the massive online stores most notably Amazon.
