Faux Leather Cube Seating Faux Leather Cube Seating FAQ’s
Otherwise known as artificial, synthetic, ‘PU’ or vegan leather, faux leather is a synthetic material that’s often used to mimic the look and feel of real leather on various products, from the likes of jackets and skirts to sofas and seats.
There are two types of faux leather:
PU Leather: Made from a polyurethane film that’s applied to a fabric backing, it’s the most common type of faux leather on the market and it’s what is primarily used for our faux leather products.
PVC Leather: This faux leather is made from a polyvinyl chloride film that’s also applied to a fabric backing. This is less common than PU Leather, but it’s generally considered more durable and has a longer lifespan. We also use this faux leather on our products.
Faux Leather is generally a very easy to clean material and often only requires a spot clean, if you act fairly quickly and don’t leave spills for a long time with the chance to stain the material. Usually, faux leather can be simply cleaned with a non-abrasive cloth soaked in lukewarm water. Taking care not to rub the leather too harshly.
For more stubborn spills or stains, use a dash of washing up liquid too, making sure to wring the cloth out so it’s not dripping with water. Then to speed up the drying process, use a soft cloth, such as a microfibre cloth and give the leather a wipe, before leaving it to air dry.
There are certainly pros and cons for both real and faux leather and it often comes down to a mix of personal preference, budget and exactly what benefits you’re looking for when it comes to choosing between the two.
The biggest difference between the two and often the main reason for choosing one way or the other is that real leather is made from animal hides, such as cow hides, whilst faux leather is made from plastic and then treated with polyurethane, wax or dye to create the texture and colour.
Faux Leather Pro’s
- As mentioned above, one of the main reasons someone may choose faux leather over real leather is its animal friendly nature.
- Faux leather products are often much cheaper than their real leather counterparts due to their often mass produced nature. However, here at Footstools Direct, all our products are handmade, yet available at a reasonable price.
- It’s very easy to clean and care for and is often more resistant to scratches and stains.
- Faux leather is available in a wide range of colours, textures and patterns too. We also offer truly bespoke branded faux leather seating options, perfect for commercial environments such as bars, shops and office spaces.
Real Leather Pro’s
- Genuine leather is distinguished by its unique pattern, grain and texture from the animal it came from. No two real leather products will look the same, creating a truly unique finish.
- Real leather is often more durable than faux leather when cared for correctly. But it’s important that the leather is truly cared for to ensure its longevity.
- Real Leather is often a very luxurious finish and has a unique feel and smell. Although it has to be said that very often, many faux leathers can closely replicate the real thing.
Here at Footstools Direct we design and manufacture both Faux Leather and Real Leather Cube seats so no matter your needs, we’ve got you covered. Remember, we also offer both real and faux leather options when it comes to footstools too!
Faux leather isn’t completely waterproof, but it’s generally more waterproof than real leather due to its synthetic plastic coating. Additional treatments to faux leather such as a wax coating or sealant spray can further enhance faux leather’s water resistance qualities.
PVC based faux leather tends to be more waterproof than PU based faux leather due to PU’s softer and more porous nature. But it’s important to note that even with the application of protective coatings, all faux leather can eventually succumb to water damage, especially if it’s subject to repeated or long term exposure.
