No one is 100% sure about the earliest celebration of Valentine’s but there are a few stories that may explain it. Many believe that Valentine’s Day can be traced back to a Roman fertility festival known as Lupercalia. Some think it marks the death of Saint Valentine, who died on February 14th. Another story is that Emperor Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome and Valentine realised the injustice and continued to marry young lovers in private. When Claudius found out he ordered Valentine to be killed, hence the evolution of Valentine’s Day. There are many similar stories but today it is celebrated in many cultures as a day of love and romance.
